Calpol 650 Plus Tablet is a widely used over-the-counter (OTC) medication for relieving pain and reducing fever. It is a product of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Active Ingredient:

The sole active ingredient in Calpol 650 Plus Tablet is Paracetamol (650 mg), also known as Acetaminophen.

How it Works:

Paracetamol is an analgesic (pain reliever) and an antipyretic (fever reducer). It works by:

  • Relieving Pain: It inhibits the production of certain chemical messengers in the brain called prostaglandins, which are responsible for transmitting pain signals.

  • Reducing Fever: It acts on the temperature-regulating center in the brain, helping to bring down a high body temperature.

Key Uses:

Calpol 650 Plus Tablet is used for the symptomatic relief of:

  • Fever: It helps to lower high body temperature caused by various conditions like infections, illnesses, or post-vaccination fever.

  • Pain: It is effective in treating mild to moderate pain, including:

    • Headache and migraine

    • Toothache

    • Muscle aches and body pains

    • Back pain

    • Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea)

    • Joint pain (e.g., in arthritis)

  • Cold and Flu Symptoms: It can help alleviate the body aches and fever associated with the common cold and flu.

Important Information and Precautions:

  • Administration: The tablet is taken orally, with or without food. Taking it with food or milk may help prevent stomach upset.

  • Dosage: The dosage should be as advised by a doctor or as indicated on the product packaging. It is crucial not to exceed the recommended dose as an overdose of paracetamol can cause serious liver damage. The typical adult dose is one tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed, with a maximum of 4 grams (which equals approximately six 650 mg tablets) in a 24-hour period.

  • Side Effects: When taken at the recommended dose, side effects are rare. However, some people may experience:

    • Nausea

    • Stomach pain

    • Mild skin rash

    • In rare cases, more serious side effects like liver damage or allergic reactions can occur.

  • Warnings:

    • Alcohol: It is unsafe to consume alcohol with this medicine, as it significantly increases the risk of liver damage.

    • Liver/Kidney Disease: Individuals with severe liver or kidney disease should use this medication with caution and only under a doctor's supervision.

    • Other Paracetamol-containing Products: Be careful not to take other medications that also contain paracetamol to avoid an overdose.

    • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: While generally considered safe in prescribed doses, it is always best to consult a doctor before taking it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
