Budecort 0.5 mg Respules is a medication used to manage and prevent symptoms of respiratory conditions like asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The active ingredient is budesonide, which is a corticosteroid.

Key Information

  • Active Ingredient: Budesonide (0.5 mg in a 2 ml respule).

  • Purpose: Budecort is a "preventer" medication. It works by reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways, making it easier to breathe and helping to prevent asthma attacks.

  • Important Note: It is not a "reliever" medication and should not be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. For immediate relief during an attack, you should use a fast-acting bronchodilator (reliever inhaler) as prescribed by your doctor.

  • Form of Administration: This medication comes in liquid form in a sealed plastic container called a respule. It is designed to be administered using a nebulizer. A nebulizer is a machine that converts the liquid medicine into a fine mist that is then inhaled through a mouthpiece or a face mask.

Uses

  • Asthma: It is a long-term (maintenance) treatment to control daily asthma symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

  • COPD: It helps manage symptoms such as breathlessness and chronic cough in patients with COPD.

  • Croup: It is also used in children aged 12 months to 8 years to treat croup, a viral infection that causes a "barking" cough.

How to Use Budecort 0.5 mg Respules

  1. Preparation: Ensure your nebulizer machine is clean and set up according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  2. Open the Respule: Twist off the top of the respule and squeeze the entire liquid contents into the nebulizer chamber.

  3. Nebulization: Connect the chamber to the nebulizer and use the mouthpiece or face mask.

  4. Inhalation: Breathe normally and deeply through the mouthpiece or mask, inhaling the mist until the chamber is empty. This usually takes 5 to 15 minutes.

  5. Follow-up Care: It is crucial to rinse your mouth with water and spit it out immediately after each use. This helps prevent a fungal infection in the mouth and throat called oral thrush. If a face mask is used, it's also a good idea to wash the face to prevent skin irritation.

  6. Regular Use: For the best results, use the medication regularly at the same time each day, as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop using it suddenly, even if you feel better, as your symptoms may return.

Common Side Effects

Side effects are generally mild, as the medication is delivered directly to the lungs, with minimal absorption into the bloodstream. Common side effects include:

  • Cough or sore throat

  • Oral thrush (fungal infection in the mouth)

  • Hoarseness or a change in voice

  • Headache

If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, or a severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), seek immediate medical help.

Important Precautions

  • Do not swallow: This medication is for inhalation only. Never swallow the liquid.

  • Medical History: Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, such as tuberculosis, any active infections in your mouth or lungs, liver disease, diabetes, or glaucoma.

  • Drug Interactions: Tell your doctor about all other medications, vitamins, or supplements you are taking, as some can interact with Budecort.

  • Children's Growth: Long-term use of corticosteroids in children may slow down their growth. Your doctor will monitor your child's growth and may adjust the dosage if necessary
