Lariago-DS Tablet is a medication manufactured by Ipca Laboratories Ltd. It is a stronger formulation of Lariago, containing a higher dose of the active ingredient.

Active Ingredient: The primary active ingredient is Chloroquine Phosphate, typically at a dose of 500 mg.

Primary Uses:

  • Treatment and Prevention of Malaria: Lariago-DS Tablet is predominantly used for:

    • Treatment of Malaria: It effectively combats malaria caused by specific types of Plasmodium parasites, including Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium malariae, as well as strains of Plasmodium falciparum susceptible to chloroquine.

    • Prevention (Prophylaxis) of Malaria: It is prescribed for individuals traveling to malaria-endemic regions to reduce their risk of contracting the disease.

  • Other Uses (less common/off-label): In some instances, it may also be prescribed for:

    • Intestinal Amoebiasis: A parasitic infection of the intestines.

    • Rheumatoid Arthritis and Autoimmune Conditions: To help manage symptoms of conditions like systemic and discoid lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, particularly when other treatments are not effective.

How it Works: Chloroquine works by interfering with the metabolic processes of the malaria parasite. It accumulates in the parasite and disrupts its ability to break down hemoglobin and detoxify harmful byproducts. This leads to the accumulation of toxic substances within the parasite, ultimately killing it and preventing the spread of infection. For autoimmune conditions, it is believed to modulate the immune system and reduce inflammation.

Important Considerations:

  • Dosage: Lariago-DS Tablet is a higher strength formulation. The dosage and duration of treatment are strictly determined by a doctor based on the individual's condition, the type of malaria, and other health factors. It is crucial to follow the prescription precisely.

  • Administration: It is usually taken orally, with food, to minimize gastrointestinal upset.

  • Completing the Course: It is vital to complete the entire prescribed course of medication, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the parasite is eradicated and to prevent drug resistance.

  • Side Effects: Common side effects may include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, itchy skin, and rash.

  • Potential Serious Side Effects: With long-term use or high doses, there's a risk of visual disturbances (blurred vision), hearing problems, and effects on heart rhythm. Regular eye and potentially blood cell count monitoring may be necessary.

  • Precautions:

    • Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially heart problems, liver or kidney disease, epilepsy, G6PD deficiency, or any history of vision problems related to similar medications.

    • Diabetics should monitor their blood sugar levels closely, as chloroquine can affect them.

    • Avoid alcohol consumption, as it can exacerbate side effects like drowsiness.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a doctor, as there are potential risks, especially with prolonged use.

Lariago-DS Tablet is a prescription medication and should only be used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
